What is Cholesterol? You already know that some cholesterol is good and some is bad. But did you know that there are clear guidelines for cholesterol levels for average Americans and newly established guidelines for high-risk patients? Cholesterol is: - Produced by the liver and other organs and also furnished in the diet through such food as meats, poultry, fish and dairy products.
- Required by the body to insulate nerves, make cell membranes, and produce certain hormones.
- Carried through the body by lipoproteins in the blood.
Two Types of Cholesterol | The Good | The Bad | | HDL (High Density Lipoprotein) transports cholesterol from the body's tissues to the liver and other sites, where it may be broken down and excreted by the body. HDL cholesterol is commonly known as "good" cholesterol. | LDL (Low Density Lipoprotein) transports cholesterol from the liver to the rest of the body. LDL cholesterol is commonly known as "bad" cholesterol. | How to Control Your Cholesterol Many Americans have succeeded in lowering their LDL "bad" cholesterol through lifestyle changes. Eating right, exercising, and relaxing are some of the basic lifestyle changes you can make to improve your overall health. Your doctor can test your cholesterol level, or you can test yourself with a kit you can purchase at your pharmacy. The National Cholesterol Education Program (NCEP) identifies LDL cholesterol as the primary target of cholesterol management. Clinical research has shown that elevated LDL, the "bad" cholesterol, is the primary cause of coronary heart disease. New Guidelines for High Risk Heart Patients Can Save Lives Every year 1.2 million Americans have a new or repeat heart attack. A new set of guidelines has been released that specifically targets these high risk Americans. The new NCEP guideline determines that high-risk heart patients should lower their LDL "bad" cholesterol to a rock bottom 70. The previous NCEP guideline was 100. | LDL Cholesterol Level Guideline (mg/dl) | | <100 (70 for high risk patients) | Optimal | | 100-129 | Near optimal/above optimal | | 130-159 | Borderline high | | 160-189 | High | | >190 | Very high | | Total Cholesterol Level | | <200 | Desirable | | 200-239 | Borderline High | | >240 | High | | HDL Cholesterol Level | | <40 | Low | | >60 | High | About the Benecol® Brand The name Benecol® brings together Bene, meaning "good," and col for "cholesterol." New taste August 18, 2010 Bill (Berkeley, CA) I have been using Benecol smart chews for the last 2 years and they have been great for lowering my cholesterol. A great alternative to statin drugs. I was completely dismayed when they were taken off the market a few months ago. I just received my first shipment of the "new" Benecol chews. The taste is dreadful! I will take them but I am very disappointed in the new taste. I guess they reformulated this product. Also, they are not available any more by the automatic system at Amazon-also a disappointment.

My experiment was a success!
I ate like a pig and took two Benecol chews a day and ate oatmeal intermittently. Unlike my experiment with Colest Off I made no attempt to be a vegetarian. The results were still promising and show that the Benecol Chews are a potent force in lowering Total Cholesterol.
My Total Cholesterol with no supplements and no diet change is a scary 287, with Colest Off and a partial vegetarian diet my total cholesterol is about 197 with a good ratio of HDL to LDL. The Benecol Chews reduced my total to an unimpressive 237, but considering that I ate high cholesterol foods this shows the potency of plant STANOLs.CholestOff 240 cplts
A good option to lower your cholesterol August 16, 2010 NJ Digital Photo (NJ) I was diagnosed with high cholesterol earlier this year. 300 total, and low HDL level. I took some aggressive steps to adjust my diet and to start exercising more, and began taking phytosterols. But I came across many reports that warned how sterols passed through the colon and could accumulate in the arteries much like cholesterol. Stanols, on the other hand, are not absorbed in the colon, yet provided the same protection from cholesterol. So I switched to Benecol. I used their margarine because the Chews weren't available since March, but it looks like they finally started stocking the Chews again. FYI, my last checkup showed a 20% drop in total cholesterol, and my HDL/total ratio is up to 4:1, which my doctor said is good. I'm hoping my next checkup will be even better.
BTW, be careful of misinformation from reviewers. Sterols and stanols are not the same, and the literature bears this fact out. Do your own research, and read CAREFULLY, and use your best judgement. Eat well, exercise, have a glass of red wine every night :) and find supplements that can help. Avoid statins if at all possible!

STOP: PLANT STANOLS/STEROLS MAY BE DEADLY TO YOUR HEALTH April 21, 2010 B. Stevens (Connecticut) 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
I began taking Benecol four years ago and I'm now terrified. Stanols/sterols may harden arteries. They may clog heart valves. Yes, they will lower your cholesterol but cholesterol may in fact be the least of your problems. [...]
There are multiple recent studies showing the possibility that this stuff is collecting in your arteries. The fact that this company does not mention THIS EXTREME, EXTREME DANGER is disgusting. A few years back they cut in half the amount of stanols in their margarine, obviously fully aware of the possibility they were damaging millions of hearts. PLEASE HEED THIS WARNING. Unfortunately, I only recently found out about it.
Also, you may notice you're developing xanthelasma around your eyes.
Update: I've just received my blood tests back. I have significantly elevated campesterol levels which could only come from taking this product. This puts me at a much higher risk of heart attack. If you are taking this stuff, demand your money back and stop taking it immediately!
